分散型控制系统（DCS）是以微处理机为基础，以微机分散控制，操作和管理集中为特性，集先进的计算机技术、通讯技术、CRT技术和控制技术即4C技术于一体的新型控制系统。随着现代计算机和通讯网络技术的高速发展，DCS正向着多元化、网络化、开放化、集成管理方向发展，使得不同型号的DCS可以互连，进行数据交换，并可通过以太网将DCS系统和工厂管理网相连，实现实时数据上网，成为过程工业自动控制的主流。
高可靠性
由于DCS将系统控制功能分散在各台计算机上实现，系统结构采用容错设计，因此某一台计算机出现的故障不会导致系统其它功能的丧失。此外，由于系统中各台计算机所承担的任务比较单一，可以针对需要实现的功能采用具有特定结构和软件的专用计算机，从而使系统中每台计算机的可靠性也得到提高。
